Which reminds me of Italy in late 1970’ies. There was a chronical shortage of coins so private banks printed notes of their own in small denominations. They were used at large within Italy but would not be accepted abroad. It is a shame that I did not save any of them. Most vendors refused to make business with you unless you produced exact payment so I spent every one of those private notes I managed to get hold of.
