Peculiarities of American bowling balls

Went to bowling with some classmates last night here in Pittsburgh. Otherwise everything was fine and smooth, but I did not understand one thing: why on earth did all the bowling balls have that small holes for fingers? I have never had trouble fitting my fingers in the holes in Europe, but here I could hardly find a ball where my fingers fit. I don’t think that my fingers have suddenly got fatter quickly… do people in the US simply have thinner fingers?

From what I heard from others, it isn’t a general phenomenon though, as others had trouble fitting their fingers in holes too.
